Aamchi Mumbai, the city that never sleeps, is known for its unpredictable weather. Just when we thought the summer heat would never end, Mumbai was hit with sudden rain and thunderstorms that transformed the city into a refreshing, cooler version of itself. This unexpected weather event came as a much-needed relief to Mumbaikars who were struggling with intense heat, and it reminded us once again how unpredictable and charming Aamchi Mumbai can be.
🌦️ What Caused the Sudden Rain in May?
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) explains that the rains were triggered by a western disturbance, which intensified due to moisture being pulled in from the Arabian Sea. This caused pre-monsoon showers far earlier than expected, making May 2025 one of the wettest Mays in recent years.
While Mumbai’s weather is known for surprises, the intensity of this particular spell caught many residents off guard. Thunderstorms, strong winds, and heavy rainfall swept through the city, causing some disruption but also offering a refreshing change.

📍 Areas Affected in Aamchi Mumbai
The heavy rainfall affected several parts of Mumbai and its surrounding suburbs, including:
Mumbai City & Suburbs
Thane
Palghar
Raigad
Residents in these areas were met with wind speeds of up to 90 km/h, coupled with heavy rainfall, which led to some waterlogging in low-lying areas. Despite these issues, many people welcomed the change in the air, which felt cooler and fresher.

🚨 IMD Issues Orange Alert for Mumbai
As the rains persisted, the IMD issued an orange alert for Mumbai and nearby districts, warning of continued thunderstorms, high winds, and the possibility of flooding in certain areas. Initially, the IMD had issued a yellow alert, but it quickly escalated due to the intensity of the weather.
“These are pre-monsoon showers, influenced by western disturbances, and while they are rare in May, they’re not unprecedented,” said an IMD spokesperson.
🌊 Impact on Daily Life in Aamchi Mumbai
As is often the case in Mumbai, the sudden downpour put the city’s infrastructure to the test:
Local trains were delayed, especially along the Churchgate-Marine Lines route.
Areas like Dahisar and Kandivali saw significant waterlogging.
Several trees and walls collapsed, requiring immediate emergency response.
Flights were briefly impacted, but operations quickly returned to normal.
Despite the disruptions, many Mumbaikars appreciated the relief from the oppressive summer heat. Aamchi Mumbai turned into a place of cool breezes and refreshing rain, with people on the streets enjoying the change.

🌬️ From Scorching Heat to Cool Breezes
Before the rains, Aamchi Mumbai had been reeling under intense heat, with temperatures consistently reaching 38-40°C. The heatwave had been relentless, making everyday activities uncomfortable for many.
But with the sudden onset of rain, temperatures dropped significantly, offering an unexpected reprieve. The cool, moisture-laden air replaced the dry, hot winds that had been sweeping across the city, and the atmosphere felt noticeably fresher, especially in the evenings.
☁️ Effects of the Weather Shift:
Hot winds were replaced by cool, moist breezes
The greenery of Mumbai appeared even more vibrant after the rain
The familiar earthy smell of rain-soaked streets filled the air
People reported using less air conditioning and fans as the temperatures dipped
For many, this drastic shift in weather felt more like the onset of the monsoon, even though the official monsoon season doesn’t begin until June.
“Mumbai mei bohot garmi thi aur ab baarish ke baad thanda mausam ho gaya hai. Aamchi Mumbai mein yeh hi toh hota hai,” said a local resident.

📅 How Long Will This Last?
The IMD forecasts that the rainfall will continue until May 9, gradually subsiding by May 10. After that, Aamchi Mumbai is expected to return to its usual dry conditions until the official monsoon sets in, likely around early June
